The Healing Power of Plants

Plants play a vital role in the ecological balance of our planet, and they are also powerfully linked to the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of people and animals, and have been since the beginning of time.  The plant kingdom continues to be the subject of a tremendous amount of research and discovery – thousands of medical scientists span the world, thanks to millions of dollars of research grants and opportunities, looking for the therapeutic, healing properties found in the bark, roots, flowers, seeds and foliage of plants.
Essential oils are the aromatic, volatile liquids distilled from the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, barks and seeds of plants.   Chemically, they are very complex, consisting of hundreds of different naturally occurring chemical compounds.  They are highly concentrated (it often takes an entire plant or more to produce a single drop of distilled essential oil) and they are far more potent than dried herbs.

The scent of organic essential oil can induce an amazing power as they influence our moods. Our sense of smell is the most direct path to our emotions and organic essential oils can have a very beneficial effect not only on our minds but also on our physical wellbeing.  Animals also respond very well to essential oils, especially horses and dogs.  However, essential oils should not be directly applied to cats, birds and other small animals as they do not metabolize the oils the same.

Here are some of the Young Living essential oil blends that may help your dog or horse perform well in the show ring.

Clarity

Clarity:  For the dog or horse (and handler) that loses focus or concentration in the ring.  Put 2 drops in the palm of your hand and use fingertips to apply the oil to the back of the neck close to the base of the skull.  Part the hair to make sure the oil gets to the skin.  Ideally the person showing the dog or horse should apply the oil to the animal and also to the back of his/her own neck.

Grounding

Grounding:  Very helpful for the dog or horse (and handler) that gets too intense or 'spacey'.  Helps to establish a solid base or connection with the earth to provide stability.  Put 2 drops in the palm of your hand and use fingertips to apply to pads of the dog's feet or the coronet just above the hoof.  If you can, try to get the oil between the hair to the skin.  Apply to all 4 feet using more oil as needed.  Ideally the person showing the dog or horse should apply the oil.

Peace & Calming

Peace & Calming:  For the dog or horse (and handler) that has trouble settling down to business; For the dog or horse that is timid, shy or fearful; For the dog or horse (and handler) that experiences sensory overload in the show environment.  Put 2 drops in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together and apply to the chest of the animal, so the dog or horse can inhale the aroma.  Ideally, the person showing the dog should apply the oil so that both benefit and both are on the same energy frequency.

Valor

Valor:  Assists in self-confidence and assertiveness.  This is a very empowering oil and is most effective when used daily to boost self-esteem.  Put 4-5 drops spaced along the animal’s spine and rub into the skin.  Ideally, the persn showing the dog or horse should apply the oil so that both benefit.

White Angelica

White Angelica:  This oil is very effective in helping the sensitive dog, horse or person cope with negative energies or feelings in the ring or surrounding environment.  Put 2 drops in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, and smooth over the animal’s head avoiding the eyes and ears.  Then lightly smooth over the body or even just around the aura.  It is most beneficial if the person showing the animal is the one applying the oil.

Bigger dogs and horses can usually use the oils straight from the bottle but you may want to start with a diluted solution.  For the toy or miniature dog breeds, dilute the oils with Young Living pure carrier oil or pure olive oil, or just smelling the oils may be sufficient.  Standard dilution is 1 to 3 drops of essential oil to ½ tsp. carrier oil.  Be very careful to avoid putting oil in the dog’s or person’s nose, eyes or ears.

Each dog or person will react individually to the oils so you will have to experiment to find the right combination for the desired results.  If you have any questions, call me at 763-444-8146.
